FAQ

Common questions about reaction roles, permissions, and getting Zira to behave.

Troubleshooting#

Zira is not responding to my commands.#

Zira needs the permissions Read Messages, Read Message History, Send Messages, and Embed Links.

Make sure Zira has these permissions both by role and by channel.

I keep getting the error: "Please set a channel and message first, then try this command again."#

You need to set a channel with /channel <#Channel> and a message with /message set <Message ID> before you can set up reaction roles.

See the Basic Reaction Role Setup guide for full details. If you'd rather skip the channel-then-message dance entirely, the Dashboard lets you pick any Zira-sent message in any channel as your active target.

Zira is not adding reactions on a message.#

If Zira isn't reacting on the message you set, you most likely missed the channel or the message step.

Use /channel <#Channel> to point Zira at the channel, then /message set <Message ID> to point her at the specific message inside it.

I already set the channel and message, but it still doesn't work.#

Zira needs Read Messages, Read Message History, and Add Reactions in the channel the message lives in. If you're using emojis from another server, Zira also needs Use External Emojis.

Check both role-level and channel-override permissions. The fastest fix is usually to re-invite Zira from zira.bot/invite so the role grants every required permission again. The full list lives on the Permissions page.

Zira has all the correct permissions, but it says it can't use this emoji.#

For external custom emojis, Zira must be a member of the server the emoji is from. Stickers and animated emojis count too.

Zira reacted to the message, but it isn't assigning roles.#

Zira needs Manage Roles, and her highest role must sit above any role she's trying to assign. Drag the Zira role up in Server Settings → Roles until it's higher than every role you want her to hand out.

How do I build or edit a Zira embed now?#

The dashboard's embed builder covers everything the old /embed slash command did, plus live preview, save-and-edit, and the join/leave variants. Open it from your server dashboard at Tools → Embed Builder.

/edit on the bot still works for editing existing Zira-sent messages. For new sends, prefer the dashboard.

Zira's reactions aren't staying in order.#

Reaction order is controlled by Discord, not Zira. We can't change the display order once a reaction has been added.

Reactions are not getting removed.#

Zira will remove a reaction if it has Manage Messages in the channel and the reaction meets one of:

  • The reaction is on an active message but isn't tied to a role.
  • The role type is once, toggle, or remove.

If reactions remain after a role flow that should clean them up, you'll need to remove them manually.

General#

How do I find a message and channel ID?#

See Discord's help page on finding User/Server/Message IDs. You'll need Developer Mode enabled.

Can I use multiple channels and messages?#

Yes. Run channel and message again whenever you want to switch targets. Switching the active channel or message does not erase reaction roles you've already set up on previous ones.

The Dashboard makes this easier: every Zira-sent message your server has is selectable from a dropdown, no IDs required.

How many roles can I add to a single message?#

Discord caps reactions on a single message at 20. Within that, you can stack as many normal, toggle, and remove reaction roles on a single emoji as you want. See normal, toggle, and remove for details.

Premium

Free servers can have up to 100 reaction roles per guild across every type combined. Premium and partner servers have unlimited reaction roles.

Can a single reaction add and remove roles?#

Yes, stack normal and remove reaction roles on the same emoji. See the remove page for an example.

Can Zira use custom emojis?#

Yes, from any server Zira is a member of. If the emoji isn't local to the current server, Zira's role needs Use External Emojis in the channel.

How do I set up a gated server?#

Two patterns work well:

  1. Forward gate. Hide every channel except a rules channel behind a role (commonly @member). Hand out that role with once or normal on a rules-acceptance message. Discord's private channels guide covers the channel permissions side.

  2. Reverse gate. Use autorole to hand every new member a restricted role that hides everything except the rules channel. Use a remove reaction role to strip that role once they accept.

How do I let users react to only a single role?#

Use channel permissions to hide the reaction role channel from anyone with the role they just earned. After they react, the channel disappears from their view.

How do I delete a reaction role?#

Use the delete command, or remove the entry directly from the Dashboard reaction roles page.

Will deleting a reaction role pull the role from existing users?#

No. Deleting a reaction role does not affect users who already have the role. It also doesn't remove existing reactions from the message.

Other#

What's the difference between Free and Premium?#

See the Premium page for current details. Highlights include:

  • Unlimited reaction roles of any type (free is capped at 100 per guild).
  • DMs to users when reaction roles are added or removed.
  • Full suggestion-system configuration: dedicated submission channel, custom routing, DM updates.
  • Timed roles up to 365 days (free is capped at 14).
  • Up to 3 voice roles per channel (free is capped at 1).
  • Unlimited user and bot autoroles (free is capped at 5 of each).

Can I gift Premium to another server?#

Yes. Buy a gift code from the Premium page (use the gift option under the payment buttons) and you'll receive a redemption link like zira.bot/gift/CODE, plus a backup copy in your Discord DMs. Send the link to whoever you're gifting: they sign in, pick one of their servers, and premium activates there instantly. Codes are one-time use, so share them carefully.
